Every really great kid’s film should, as far as I’m concerned, come with a great big dollop of darkness served on the side. And anyone who’s read the original Roahl Dahl novel that this movie is based on will know that that’s the case with Matilda-black as coal comedy surrounds Mara Wilson as the titular child, while Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman co-star. It’s probably a lot darker than you’d care to remember, but sweeps you along with a beautiful, surreal world filled with magic and formidably terrifying school teachers. The universe as seen through the eyes of a child.
