10 Movies That Didn’t Get the Recognition They Deseved

2. Fat City

Yeah, so, boxing movies have kind of been done to death since as long as anyone can remember. But that’s not to say that this fascinating character study doesn’t hold a lot of water- a fantastic performance by an up-and-coming Jeff Bridges throws the movie into high gear, while Stacy Keach does well as a stoic professional past his prime. It might sound like it’s been done to death, but here it’s surprisingly fresh, with no punches pulled (excuse the pun) and a beautiful, engrossing relationship evolving between Bridges and Keach as the movie goes on.

I found Velvet Goldmine to be bad on so many levels that it makes me question the rest of this list.

  • Charlie Loves Merlot

I’m a huge fan of ’70s Glam Rock, and “Velvet Goldmine” isn’t that great. Even if the plot/pacing issues were worked out, the film would still only attract a niche audience.

The fact that you refer to Christopher Walken as Christian Walken automatically discredits your entire list

Aside from the typo in the headline.

      • http://www.wineandwatch.com/ Wine and Watch

        That too!

        Deseved

  • lakawak

Most of these got EXACTLY the attention they deserved…being put on many Worst Movies Ever list.

    • Darrell Parks

      right on!

  • nancydarby

What does Tony Curtis have to do with Velvet Goldmine? And is it so hard to proofread one paragraph?

  • Joseph Heavey

Pretty sure the Bourne series is based off of a relatively popular series of books, thus they would have a bigger audience than the long kiss goodnight.

  • PointCtrPoint

No Speed Racer, not a real list.

  • Shazza

It’s Larenz Tate and a lot of POC know it.

Deseved. Is the meaning of that word anything like ‘deserved’?

  • puremercury

Gotta love any movie with “Christian Walken.” That definitely “deseved” more recognition.

  • Darrell Parks

Balls of Fury? Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 1. Nuff said.

    • Crystal Shepard

The title is “didn’t get the recognition they deserved.” A 1 would fit that criterion quite well if the film deserved a higher number.

I’d give Balls of Fury a 3, for a few very entertaining moments in an otherwise painful film. That’s enough to say it’s underrated in my book.

  • Darrell Parks

The lack of recognition for these movies? Impossible to get that many potheads full of Thunderbird into a theater.

  • Charles Thompson

Who the heck is Christian Walken?

  • kipsydaisy

“Christian Walken?” Who is writing or editing this? And saying “done to death” twice in a one paragraph summary is doing that phrase to death.

  • Krungle

Wow really calling in the Knights Tale? That might of worked sooner after Dark Knight when everyone was pretending they liked Heath Ledger (even though they were the same ones crying about him being cast as the Joker)

    • Crockett

“That might of…” Why is it that people these days do not understand contractions? Instead of writing ‘ve (a contraction of “have”), they write “of”–which is based on what they hear, rather than actual grammar. This error is so prevalent on the internet that I fear it will become canon.

  • Krungle

Agree on Gremlins 2, it was far superior

    • Angelo Brattoli

Yes, in the way that horse manure is better than cow manure.

  • fairportfan

Unfortunately, the original VHS release of “Gremlins 2″ cut out one of the funniest throwaway gags from the film (with Paul Bartel and Hulk Hogan) and replaced it with a longer and much less funny alternate sequence.

I have no idea if the DVD is still that way; i need to check.

The film itself is, indeed, brilliant.

  • fairportfan

“Streets of Fire” – one of three Walter Hill films that are worth watching.

  • Maryann Fuentes

The Long Kiss Goodbye is one of my favorite movies!!!!

  • rasdebol

My vote is for “Kingdom of Heaven”.. A Ridley Scott masterpiece that seems to have gotten overlooked by almost everyone……

  • Jeffrey S Williams

And with ‘Love Jones” don’t forget the KILLER sountrack!

  • tony

Fat City was so boring (I saw it in the theaters when it came out) that I didn’t know whether to nap or go buy more popcorn… zzzzzzzzZzzzzzzz

  • Brian Johnson

Maybe if Velvet Goldmine hadn’t played like “Citizen Kane” in Britain in the 1970′s…

  • Angelo Brattoli

As an avid movie fan with a collection in excess of over 500 films I have to ask. How much crack did you do before you compiled this list?

  • TootUnCommon

Long Kiss Goodnight is amazing. Still one of my favorite action flicks.

  • farquar

heath ledger or not… a knights tale was horrendous!

  • dnealwinchester

The only movie I would agree with that didn’t get the attention it deserved is Velvet Goldmine. I thought it was a well researched film that closely hit upon the subculture that Glam and Punk belonged to in early 70′s London, England. I was barely a toddler when the scene arrived, and in America. That being said, I was glad to be old enough to have experienced the New Wave sound that emerged in the late 70′s out of England.

  • B0Jest

Streets of Fire took the plot from Star Wars and put it in a biker movie.

  • Nick Roberts

    So. Many. Typos.
    smdh…

    • Crockett

Was this article written hastily, with little or no research, and even less attention to spelling and grammar? It would seem so.

      • Christine

It most certainly was written hastily. However, overlooking the poor grammar and spelling; Maybe English isn’t their forte? This is an informed list of some notable movies and performances, that I agree with the writer, were most certainly overlooked. ; )

  • Barry Wilson

What does Tony Curtis have to do with Velvet Goldmine?

  • Pet_Orange

Even on this list “Apollo 13″ gets snubbed. It won two piddly little Oscars. One for Best Editing and Best Sound. Not Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Producer, Special Effects…

  • thedarkangel1975

I watched the Long Kiss Goodnight when it first came out. It sucked then and still does. A Knight’s Tale was awesome.

  • Bill Brennan

Deseved? “Christian” Walken? Gremlins 2: The New Batch? You should really be sober when coming up with lists like this.

  • Keith Casey Ahlas

I would add “The Cable Guy” to this list.

  • pocketdare

Wow – it’s as if you chose 10 movies at random from the Rotten Tomatoes 20% or lower list, read the descriptions and made up a poorly spelled, grammatically criminal defense for each of them just to get me to view some advertisements… oh wait. Hmm. Well done.

  • Okc Dave

or maybe they were all just crap. I might recognize what’s in my toilet but that doesn’t mean I want to dwell on it.

  • Peter David

You know there should be an R in deserve, right?

  • Daniel Shea

    10 random films.

  • Arielrocks%

    Man this site sucks.

  • sabretruthtiger

    Rubbish.

The ACTUAL scariest horror films include the Exorcist and the Omen as the 2 scariest
Closely followed by the Grudge and the Ring.
