Some TV series are just a little too clever for their own good, and this was definitely the case for Carnivale. Created by Daniel Knauf and set in the little-explored dustbowl era of America, it followed around a travelling carnival filled with freaks and frighteners of every kind-and those were just the guests. A profoundly strange show that dealt rather bombastically with the themes of good and evil, it nonetheless retained it’s sense of humour and pathos….but not in the eyes of network executives, who cut the show after just two of it’s proposed five series. The story was forced to end less than half-way through, leaving thousands of fans unsatisfied and many clamouring for a reboot of the unique historical series.
