7. Blood Simple

While the Coen brothers are best known for taking on quirky, intelligent genre-bending movies (think The Big Lebowski or Fargo), this, their first movie, is probably one of their finest-and most overlooked. Starring John Getz and Frances McDormad, it follows the story of a man who hires a private eye to knock off his unfaithful wife and her lover- but soon things get complicated. Clever, brutal, and intelligently made, this 1984 gem shouldn’t be forgotten over their later classics.

    I am perplexed that while some of these are horror movies that are certainly very good, and a couple of them Australian, that there is no mention of “The Snowtown Murders”. Both disturbing and compelling, the movie is based on true events and leaves the viewer far more disturbed than the excellent “Wolf Creek”.

    One of my favorite movies of all time is “Big Man on Campus.” If you happened to catch it on TV as a kid chances are you can still quote the whole movie. Got a 6 out of 10 on IMdb, despite being virtually unknown.
