9. The ‘Burbs

Joe Dante isn’t everyone’s cup of tea- his distinctive horror-comedy style (seen in more famous movies like Gremlins) is pretty divisive, but this is probably his most accessible movie-and bizarrely, his most maligned. With a stormingly good cast (Carrie Fisher, Tom Hnaks, Corey Feldman and Bruce Dern all feature) and a great story-tight-knit neighbourhood suspects neighbours of being murderous serial killers-it’s a mystery as to why this didn’t do better.

    I am perplexed that while some of these are horror movies that are certainly very good, and a couple of them Australian, that there is no mention of “The Snowtown Murders”. Both disturbing and compelling, the movie is based on true events and leaves the viewer far more disturbed than the excellent “Wolf Creek”.

    One of my favorite movies of all time is “Big Man on Campus.” If you happened to catch it on TV as a kid chances are you can still quote the whole movie. Got a 6 out of 10 on IMdb, despite being virtually unknown.
