Hey, any film that sells itself as “America’s Only Blacklisted Movie” has to be worth a watch, right? If that’s your line of thought (and it’s certainly mine), then may I point you in the direction of the brilliant Salt of the Earth. It wound up being blacklisted thanks to McCarthyism and it’s creators alleged communist manifesto, but that’s not to say that the appeal of this movie is in illicit viewing. It’s a quiet masterpiece, a satisfying and affecting drama that takes apart a strike based on the recent strikes in New Mexico (the film was released in 1954). Intelligent, satisfying, and beautifully shot, the film gained an audience in the rest of the world but failed to totally crack America, and remains to this day a film that you’ll never believe you haven’t seen once you’ve seen it.
