Horror is an oft-overlooked genre in the world of cinema, and Grave Encounters is no exception. While many feel that the found footage genre has been done to death (and who am I to disagree?), there’s a real spark of creativity and cleverness in this handycam masterpiece. Based around the filming of Most Haunted-style TV show Grave Encounters, the movie follows the cast and crew through a big ol’ haunted asylum, eventually realizing that their cynicism might be misplaced. A masterclass in tension building, this movie lingers on the build-up and the characterization, pulling no punches when the proverbial starts to hit the fan. Not one to risk home alone, this is the perfect movie for anyone looking for genuine scares mixed in with high-quality film-making and some great performances from unknown actors. And, like most horror sequels, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you to avoid Grave Encounters 2.
