Top 10 Terrifying Movies of All Time

I believe that secretly, deep down, everyone enjoys being scared. Okay, so I’m not saying everyone enjoys being petrified witless or hiding behind the sofa or sleeping with the lights on for six months after you saw Paranormal Activity, but we all like a great horror film. Everyone has their own particular opinion on what makes a movie really scary (my own biggest fear is at number 7), but if you’re looking for guaranteed, straight-to-the-veins scares, let me tempt you with some truly terrifying horror classics…

1. The Blair Witch Project

You might roll your eyes at this one, but have you actually seen it? Although it seems to come up on every Scariest Films Ever list, there’s a damn good reason for it- it’s terrifying. A perfect example of why tension is so much more important than violence, it’s a film where very little happens on screen-but a whole hell of a lot happens in your imagination. And that ending….I didn’t go wandering round the supposedly-haunted woods with a video camera for weeks afterwards.

      Seriously, I could run around in the mountains at night with a video camera and make something better than The Blair Witch Project. I live in TN, all I’d need to do is get in the car, drive a few hours, cry a little bit, run around aimlessly. video tape Adams (that city in and of itself just has a creepy vibe), then go to the cave (Bell Witch) and tape some more. Yeah, if people thought Blair Witch was scary, hell, I’d have a masterpiece!

      1st off, I don’t believe that someone would be that shitty of a parent, where they actually thought it was a good idea to bring their 6yr old kid to that kind of movie! Regardless of how shitty the movie was.

    The unlisted “Exorcist” is definitely number one. As for the ones listed, I guess you could make a case for some of them if you equate “disturbing” (Henry) or irritating (Blair Witch Project’s hour and a half of people screaming obscenities at each other) with being scary. But “Theatre of Blood?” Great, fun movie but not scary by a long-shot.

    I have seen all 10 movies and of all 10 none of them are terrifying at all. American Mary is an awesome movie in my opinion. Also shutter is a good movie as long as you watch the orginal and not the american BS remake.

    If you don’t know what Poltergeist is, then you must be either 15 or not a fan of horror. One of Spielberg’s most acclaimed movies.

    I have seen almost everything on this list, and while entertaining, few would be really scary. And, really, Evil Dead is so incredibly over rated.

      You are pretty much on target. There is the whole genre of Frankenstein and Dracula, while corny- still legitimate scary films. Also how about The Beast with 5 Fingers, (Peter Lorie) ? This one is back into the late forty’s !

      I agree with you on The Amityville Horror (the original one), The Shining and The Thing. Amityville Horror was so good it’s been over and over again. The Shining has been remade but no one can top Nicholson’s performance (his Here’s Johnny with that madman stare is really scary), and The Thing was terrifying because we couldn’t trust that anyone left was human. The sight of that dog being taken over by the thing is so horrible I’ve never been able to watch it again.

    For the second time today, if you were stoned out of your mind, and it was mid seventies, and you headed into a big Los Angeles theatre with a fancy sound system to see the Original Alien, never having seen the monster and having no expectation of seeing something that hideous, this is the most terrifying film of all time.

      You have it spot on about Alien!! I lay awake all night watching first the closet, then the window, then the closet…you get the picture. It is all relative, though. The Exorcist did nothing for me (scare-wise) but friends who thought The Exorcist terrifying found Alien to be a big yawn. It depends on what you believe is possible, I guess.

          Mary the Exorcist in my opinion is the scariest movie ever made bar none for it was the only scary movie that actually caused a death upon viewing it. Most people probably do not know that an elderly gentleman upon seeing it actually suffered a cardiac arrest and expired.

      No it’s not it’s almost as boring as Blair witch it’s just gross with the vomiting and peeing but not scary, when we were kids we snuck in to see it because we heard it was scary we weren’t scared at all

      I don’t know about the movie, but the BOOK was one which left you really looking around the room, touching everything in sight to make sure you were back to a mundane reality. “Book, table, chair, lights on, nothing creepy here. Thank the Heavens!” Usually what makes a movie horrifying is the conditions surrounding the characters — in a situation where they are in danger and have no way to escape. The Thing and The Shining both had people who were in danger, one an unknown source, and the other a husband and father slowly descending into the depths of madness. In both, the isolation and surrounding weather conditions heightened the terror. Some movies are not so much scary as simply gory and gross. I guess it all depends on what terrifies you.

        The book Salem’s Lot scared me-I was reading it late at night and was creeped out I had the overhead light on to make sure the room was as brightly lit as possible. The movie was stupid.

    I think people really enjoy hating on others. All of those movies are good in their own way. Although I haven’t found a horror movie that could scare me since I was 12, I still appreciate the movies because they are witty and I’ve been a fan of Horror for as long as I can remember. How scary do you want a movie to be? The only reason I don’t get scared anymore is because my brain dismisses it as ever being possible and I think too logically. Which is pretty shitty if you ask me.. But these are all classic horror films which I enjoyed very much. You negative people are just being stuck up and difficult for absolutely no reason. Everybody thinks differently and everybody likes different things. No need for hatred. It’s immature.

        “Showgirls” is indeed a terrifying film: Nomi pushing Cristal down the stairs, the ball bearings on the floor of the stage, Nomi’s thigh-high high-heeled boots that she uses to kick the shit out of the rapist, the rape scene, Kyle McLachlan’s head, the symbolic use of “319″, lipstick on nipples, the way Nomi pronounces “Versace” (“Vurr-Sase”) . . . this one will stay with you forever. The lap dancing sequences are definitely not for the faint of heart.

      Spielberg pretty much did direct Poltergeist, He took over when Tobe Hooper mishandled a lot of it. Was rumored that he had a bit of a drug problem at the time.
      Speilberg was making ET at the time and the academy would not allow him to direct both simultaneously. That he “secretly” helmed Poltergeist got him into a little trouble (legally and with the academy)

        Psycho is without a doubt a true classic. It is a real stand alone in the horror movie genre. This is another legendary horror movie that impacted the human psyche.it had an indelible affect on women all across America for it had them afraid to take showers. Alfred Hitchcock will forever be the all time Master of Suspense. Nobody did it better.

    To a generation known for Justin Bieber, DubStep, and Bronies this list is an great introduction to terrifying movies. I make that assumption, as I figure this list would contain movies that 14-year-olds might be scared by, but also, because I suspect that was the age of its author.
    What thought/research went into this list—if any?
    Not only would no adult/horror-fan/geriatric heart patient with a weak bladder find these the most terrifying movies, they would wonder why the author simply googled “horror movies” and included the first ten titles they came across.
    Not bad movies by any means, but terrible writing.

    Poltergeist is a great movie too, and the Evil Dead is not a long shot
    If you’re going to go with Henry (very disturbing) you might as well add A Serbian Film and Irreversible if only for the disturbing factor. Make them Die Slowly and Cannibal Holocaust as well.

    Martyrs is another weird disturbing one I just thought of, Human Caterpillar as well, Hostel, Cabin Fever, etc etc.

    I do like Pontypool and Psycho. I just think that none of your choices are top 10 scary.

      Pontypool was just fuckin weird! And Im gonna have to say no to Cannibal Holocaust. That is just a gorefest…and I don’t necessarily think gorefests count as horror. Oh and you were close but it’s The Human CENTIPEDE. I have yet to see both A Serbian Film and Make them Die Slowly, so I can’t really comment on those. I have seen Martyrs, it was interesting and disturbing. I’ve also seen Irreversible. A movie that starts at the end and ends at the beginning is kinda hacky though. And to be honest, I don’t really count it as a horror film.

      One film you listed that I absolutely love is Session 9! Great setting, interesting premise, great acting as well, with some nice lil twists. That movie creeps me out every time I watch it! It is without a doubt one of the most under-rated horror films ever made. I’d also like to add Night of The Living Dead.

    Latex and jump shots don’t make a movie scary unless there’s suspense to make them effective. Exorcist (as so many on this list know) is probably the best. For me, Silence of the lambs comes a close second.

      Exorcist not scary at all. The Shining yes. Stepnen King, generally pretty good. Lawn Mower Man, Pet Cemetary. The Omen was good. Try The Grudge or it’s Japanese version, Ju-on. They’re worth a few good chills.

    Also, check out John Carpenter’s “In the Mouth of Madness”, or Karen Black in “Trilogy of Terror” with the Zuni doll.

    All three will make your hair stand up on end.

I enjoyed “Pontypool,” and I would like to put in a word for the *original* (not the 1990s remake) of “The Haunting.” I saw it on TV when I was in high school, and it gave me the creeps.

    The problem with lists like this is that they are always subjective. The target in the comments seems to be Blair Witch. Which I agree was NOT scary, but that’s my opinion. Personally I found IT terrifying to the point that I’ve never been able to watch the entire thing, but I have a crippling fear of clowns. While watching Sinister, my 15 yr old daughter wouldn’t take her blanket off her head, while my 11 yr old son thought it was the greatest movie ever made. Subjective.

    While there are so many others that are worthy, it’s a good list. I especially commend the inclusion of V/H/S/ which is one of the most creepy and overall disturbing movies, in an oddly good way, that I have seen in recent years.

    This is just my opinion, but I really don’t understand how people find Poltergeist, The Shining, The Exorcist, Paranormal Activity, The Grudge, The Ring, Audition, and Salo scary. The Shining was completely boring and it gave me a headache. I laughed while watching The Exorcist. Paranormal Activity made me fall asleep and had only one jumps scare. I don’t want to describe the rest since I think I’ve made my point. Not that I think that The Blair Witch Project is scary or good, but has anyone ever seen Where the Dead Go to Die? It makes The Blair Witch Project look like the greatest movie ever. A movie I would recommend is A Serbian Film. It’s not exactly scary, but it definitely is disturbing. I am not trying to insult anyone’s opinion just so anyone knows.

      You would recommend “A Serbian Film?” That is the biggest piece of shit ever made out of celluloid, and I mean that with all apologies to pieces of shit. That fucked up in the head movie has no redeeming value at all, it’s like a bunch of demented 14 year old boys all got together to decide what would be the most sick and disgusting thing they could make into a movie. Hence, “A Serbian Film”, a movie that will forever link Serbia as “Sickfuckistan.”

    Not quite sure, like others, how Alien doesn’t make this cut. (Then again, maybe I’m biased- it and Aliens are my two favorite movies of all time.)
    Also unsure of how Martyrs doesn’t pop up… I’m fairly desensitized to horror, having grown up on it, and that movie didn’t necessarily scare me, but it grated on my nerves (in a good way,) unlike anything I can remember in a long time.

    The Blair Witch Project was about as scary as “Mary Poppins” imo. And one of the scariest movies ever was that third Pirates of the Caribean movie during which I was terrified it would never, ever, end.

    I love this list because it mentions several lesser know films that I haven’t seen. The author goes with what he actually likes rather than generating the same list of box office smash hits that we’ve seen on tons of websites. He also picks a few films that are subtle and prey upon your imagination. The original 1963 release of The Haunting is a great example and one of my all-time favorites. I also liked several moments in Candyman, especially the parking deck scene.

    I’ve been a Horror movie buff for nearly 50 years.The real question is, What movie does it take to really scare you ? you know the one….keep looking behind you even though you know nobody else is there, or the one that makes the hairs on the back of your head to stand at attention. How about the one that makes you insist that at least one light, in view, remains in the on position for the rest of the evening. My personal favorite is the one movie that leaves me to take evasive action afterwards by turning on ESPN’s Sportscenter or The Andy Griffin Show to detox myself from the horror I just witnessed.

    American Mary isn’t a horror film…it’s a gory thriller and is NEVER scary; it’s not intended to be. Also, Pontypool (excellent as it is), is truly more of a stage-like drama and not truly horror. It has one or two horrific moments but isn’t scary. This is an odd list, indeed.

    The Conjuring was the first horror film in a good few years to make me jump out of my seat! Insidious would be right behind it!!! That’s talking modern film. As far as the classics go, The Exorcist STILL gives me the creeps, to date!!!
